Production begins before recording — while the writing is still forming and the piece is discovering its shape.
By the time we’re in the studio, my role isn’t to polish, but to make space for something real to happen in the performance and to make sure it’s captured when it emerges.
The work is largely about listening and timing: knowing when to stay out of the way, when to roll tape, and when to let a moment pass without trying to fix it.
Imperfection isn’t a problem to solve; it’s often where the life is.
I work primarily in band and ensemble contexts, where feel and collective intuition matter as much as precision.
Some of the best takes are the ones that didn’t know they were being recorded. Recording is less about control than readiness.
This work requires trust, openness, and a tolerance for what happens when structure and chance meet. We care about craft, but not at the expense of vitality.
I produce and mix when it serves the coherence of the work. In every case, the aim is the same: recordings that feel human, grounded, and alive — where the emotion is in the writing and revealed through performance.
